What is Baseball? Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport that has been played by millions of people around the world since the 1800s The sport is typically played between two opposing teams composed of nine players each. The objective of the game is to score runs by hitting the ball and running around four bases in an organized sequence. At the end of nine innings, whichever team has the greatest number of runs is declared the winner. Baseball is one of the most popular and well-known sports in the United States, and it has international appeal as well. Example 1 - Home Run Derby The Home Run Derby is a popular All-Star game event in which players from both teams compete to see who can hit the most home runs in a set amount of pitches. It is a popular event among fans and players alike, as it often features some of the most powerful hitters in the game competing for the title of the Home Run Derby Champion. The Home Run Derby often takes place annually, and it has been held in various cities around the United States since 1985. Example 2 - Little League Little League Baseball is an international organization that provides a youth development program centered around organized baseball teams. The program is aimed towards providing opportunities for young people to engage in physical exercise, develop teamwork skills, and learn the rules and fundamentals of the game. The Little League World Series is a highly anticipated annual event in which teams made up of players between the ages of 11 and 13 compete in a tournament to decide the champion. Example 3 - Spring Training Spring Training is a period of time prior to the start of the baseball season when teams play exhibition games and work to hone their skills before the regular season starts. During spring training, teams work on honing their lineup and rotation, as well as developing new strategies. Spring Training takes place over a span of several weeks and is an important part of the preparation for the beginning of the regular season. Example 4 - Minor Leagues The Minor Leagues are the various professional baseball leagues that serve as a developmental stage for potentially major league-ready players. These leagues provide an opportunity for professional baseball players to hone their skills and work to improve their performance. The Minor Leagues are composed of several levels, from rookie ball all the way up to Triple-A. Example 5 - Fantasy Baseball Fantasy Baseball is a fantasy sport in which participants act as the “general manager” of a team made up of professional baseball players. Participants draft players, trade players, manage rosters, and compete in a simulated “league” against other participants. Fantasy Baseball is a popular game among baseball fans, as it provides an opportunity to engage in the sport in a new and exciting way.
