For example, scientists have used this technology to modify bacteria in order to produce insulin and other drugs, as well as to produce crops with improved yields or with enhanced resistance to drought, pests, and diseases. Example 2: Gene Therapy. This field of biotechnology uses modified viruses or DNA to insert new genes into an organism’s cells, and has been used to treat various genetic disorders including cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, and some forms of cancer. Example 3: Stem Cell Research. Stem cell research involves the use of stem cells, which are special cells that have the potential to develop into many different types of cells and tissues, to create new cells and tissues for medical treatments. This field of biotechnology has enabled medical researchers to develop treatments for a variety of conditions, including spinal cord injuries, heart disease, and diabetes. Example 4: Vaccine Development. Vaccine development is a field of biotechnology that involves manipulating an organism’s immune system in order to develop a vaccine that can protect the host from a particular disease. Vaccines have been developed to protect against many diseases, including polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and influenza. Example 5: Diagnostic Tests. This field of biotechnology involves the development of tests that can be used to detect the presence of particular diseases or conditions in an organism. Examples of diagnostic tests that are developed using biotechnology include tests for HIV, malaria, cancer, and some mental health disorders.
